"Nothing can stand..."/La Rochefoucault

"Nothing can stand the test of comparison with the Falls of Niagara."

这是1795年6月21日，La Rochefoucault-Liancourt到尼亚加拉的时候说的，他是属于早期到尼亚加拉的游客之一。那时交通很不便利，他从伊利湖坐船到Chippawa，他写道：“We were now approaching the prospect of the Grand Cataract of Niagara, one of the principal objects of our journey, and which I had long desired to see...At last we heard the noise, and perceived the spray.”然后与他的随从骑马到大瀑布，在瀑布时他写道：“It is impossible to describe the impression, which this cataract made upon our minds.”

他们爬到瀑布下方去。这是一个非常艰难的旅程。他们把树砍下来，铺在灌木丛和岩石上，然后手脚并用，慢慢向底部爬去。一步之误就可能葬身于此，他们小心翼翼地爬到了河沿边上，他很高兴自己完成了这一壮举。当天晚上他在Chippawa用餐，招待他们的是James Hamilton队长和他的妻子Louisa。

第二天早上，在滂沱大雨里，他们又重新看了一次瀑布。这次他被带到Table Rock，那时Table Rock还未崩塌，是看马蹄瀑布的最佳观景台。他写道：“It is from this spot that this wonder of nature should be viewed.”

他感到很好奇为什么英国政府没有在这里修路，使游客更容易前来看大瀑布。当时因为来看瀑布的人不多，因此政府觉得花费巨资去建配套设施不值得。在整个北美，La Rochefoucault还看了其它地方，但他觉得“Nothing can stand the test of comparison with the Falls of Niagara.”（没有什么是可以与尼亚加拉大瀑布相提并论的。）
